This is rather like asking the question "What is a Church?" or, "What is Faith?" People who are asked such a question will give different answers, in their own words, based on their own perceptions, experience and education. The most common answer is "A peculiar system of morality, based on allegory and illustrated with symbols". It is, therefore, a moral society which attempts to encourage men to be upright in family, in business and in public life. All Freemasons are taught that any duties which they have as a Freemason come only after their duties to family, work, and faith. This one of the most difficult questions to answer and even Freemasons themselves give differing definitions. This is probably due to the fact that Freemasonry does not impose any particular Dogma, has no Theology but simply attempts to guide members to a more moral way of life. In the year 1855, certain brethren decided to form a Lodge in West Bromwich, and apply to the United Grand Lodge of England for a Warrant. At that time, only Five Masonic Lodges were working under Warrants issued by Grand Lodge, in this portion of South Staffordshire. more details...
